I am one who does not worry about the spine on single hand fly rods. However up into the long spey rods I am not so sure. The actions they go through perhaps the spine is very important. How in the world would spine.....well....actually how would you place the guides on each section of the rod in relation to the spine? It could be so different thoughout the whole casting process. How do you spine and place guides on a 13' 4pc spey blank? Any help would be appreciated.

I would ignore the spine and use the straightest axis. But if you want to spine it and put the guides on or opposite the spine, do each section separately and then align and join them. Check the spine again (it will change slightly once the sections are assembled) adjust and necessary and then orient it as you wish.

Thanks Tom. I was just wondering with the longer rod and the action of spey, if the heavier load with longer line....if the spine would indeed have a torque problem. Sounds like much ado about nothing....just as in single handed rods.

Torque will come from the lever arm effect of the guides. It will always be present. Use the lowest frame guides you can to help reduce this effect as much as possible.
