Hello All:
Just a quick note, my son had an 11ft Ugly Stick surf rod and recently started using it. The insert on the guides seem to be made of some sort of hardened plastic. He has used the rod about 5 times and already the insert on the tip top has grooves in it from the monon? Should I just remove the inserts and leave the guides bare or should i look at replacing the guides altogether ? Thanks in Advance Fernando Torres-NERB Re: Ugly Stick Guides

You need to replace them. It sounds like the ceramic rings have come out and left the plastic shock ring behind. Those won't hold up, and if you just leave the frames empty they'll eat his line in short order.

Thanks Tom:
Thats what it seems to may have been the problem, now that you mention it, I know we we fishing off a bridge one night with a fence behind us and he did whack the fence on one of the casts and that may have had the ceremaic ring come out. I will look into it and replace it anyway. Fernando Torres-NERB Re: Ugly Stick Guides

You might want to have a guide or two added while you are replacing guides. I have repaired a few Ugly Sticks after the inserts have popped out or broken and have noted they short you at least one guide when they are manufactured. I typically redo them entirely and add one or two guides depending on the rod. That seems to take care of the problem.
