Got curious on @#$%&, and won one of these for a low price. As the seller warned, it's VERY stiff for casting a fly line. I put a 12# sinking line on it, and I DID manage 60' casts, but it's VERY rigid.
Now, what do I do with this rod? I'm not going to troll flies, I don't think. Should I strip it down and make a finesse rod out of it? Perhaps a long casting crankbait rod? Any suggestions? Thanks. -TH Re: What to do with an 8'6" Salmon Trolling Fly Rod - 30# rating

Sounds like a 9' blank that I have. My plans are to make a 9' spiral wrap casting rod with micro guides for casting small lures with 12-15# braided line for steelhead and salmon at river mouths. I'm not sure just how small the lures could go but at that length, using 2 handed casting, it could be a very comfortable rod to cast light lures either while wading, from a boat or a kayak/canoe. That is what I have planned for mine.
As for a #12 fly line, you are talking taking mature tarpon in order to justify something that heavy. That is not a weight that you would want to spend all day blind casting. Re: What to do with an 8'6" Salmon Trolling Fly Rod - 30# rating

Richard, Thanks for sharing. That is similar to what I had planned, except I was going to leave the current handle configuration, (3" fighting butt + handle) and only change the guides for Kayak fishing. The reel down low and the length should really work on the yak. Should be able to fling a 1/4 ounce jig/curlytail a mile! -TH Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
