CPW Rod Wrapper question

I just bought a used CPW rod wrapper with the chuck directly connected to the Dayton motor. I really like the way that the motor allows rotating the blank freely without any amount of resistance but I have a question about the power of the motor itself. I have never used this particular wrapper before so please bear with me if my question appears odd. I am not sure that the motor has enough torque to properly wrap a rod. I can hold the chuck and keep it from spinning. Is the motor designed this way or does it need to be replaced? I know that wrapping does not require a lot of torque but is this too little torque? I know that this particular model from CPW is not designed for use as a lathe for turning handles. I have another machine to do my turning so this is not a concern. One other question that I have is in regards to the turn screws on the chuck. Should the tips have some type of rubber or plastic cover on them to protect the rod. If so, where do I get some replacements? Thanks. Re: CPW Rod Wrapper question

as far as the screws go I always use several layers of tape to protect the rod. covers can be purchased at any of the big box stores. look for the white wire shelving they are used as end caps for the cut ends Re: CPW Rod Wrapper question

Without any gear reduction, there is little torque available. But Flex Coat also sells units for wrapping that have the chuck attached directly to the motor. About all you can do, since you already have the machine, is give it a try and see how well it works.

Thanks for the quick answers. I will look for those at Home Depot this weekend. Tom, I think that the torque is adequate for wrapping. Just wanted to make sure. The foot control leaves much to be desired. Looks like this may be the first thing to replace. Any suggestions? Re: CPW Rod Wrapper question

Thanks very much. I really appreciate your thoughts but the cpw foot control is the same as what you have. I want to upgrade to an electronic foot control. Again thanks. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
