How do you measure tip sizes in 64th's of an inch? Callipers? Any idea where to purchase an appropriate measuring device? Re: Another dumb question

Any of the vendors on the left should carry an inexpensive tip top gauge Mike (Southgate, MI) If I don't want to, I don't have to and nobody can make me (except my wife) cuz I'm RETIRED!! Re: Another dumb question

Greetings,
Its a fact that rod-tips are sized in whole or fractional increments of 16ths of an inch. That guage may be handy, but the caliper{especially digital that is easier & accurate} will get your answers, way too many other ways. I have not checked, yet, but Harborfreight sells digital calipers (choose the 6 inch version unless you're into a broader activities) including a nice case for ~20USD. You'll need one to measure for many steps for your rodbuilding tasks. If your doing anything, these can be very handy and they measure in both millimeters and inches. Go for, it'll last for decades, Bob Marie Re: Another dumb question

I second the idea of the digital caliper. The least used tool I have if I can find it is the tip top gage. Most rod blanks or dealers provide the tip top size. Re: Another dumb question

You can use a regular caliper that measures in the thousands of an inch for this as well. If you take a tip that's 5/64ths of an inch; to get the decimal equivalent on a caliper divide 5 by 64 to get 0.078". I've made a cheat sheet with the decimal equivalents to the 64th's to save time. The tip top gauge is the easiest to use of all the suggestions and an added bonus is that it will measure both male and female, try that with a caliper! By the way I have both. Re: Another dumb question

I suggest the purchase of both as well. The tiptop gauge is only a few dollars and NO rod builder should be without a decent set of calipers, IMO. Total combined investment for the two should only be about $10-11. Re: Another dumb question

Kyle,
The most important answer is that there is no such thing as a dumb question. Never apologize for asking a question. All that you are asking for is a transfer of knowledge. Be a bold and good student. Roger Re: Another dumb question

I just purchased digital calipers at harbor freight for $10.00 without the case it measures in inches, mm, and fraction's. I do recommend you getting both aswell. Good Luck Re: Another dumb question

Along with the $ 20 electronic calipers, a $ 3 drill bit sizing tool/gage works for me.

I saw those calipers on harbor freight's website for $10 yesterday. I brought the CC to the office today, so I'm about to grab a set. Thanks guys. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
