Hi, all
I need to know what rod blanks everybody likes to use for crappie spider rigs. I want 12 footers 2 or 3 piece and will be pushing 1/32 oz. jigs four on each side of the boat.

Thanks for the help

Mike

Mike,
Are you going to be using these at tight line rods?
i.e. although you will be running light jigs, will you have a heavy weight on the bottom to keep the lines from tangling?

Take care
Roger

Hi, Roger

No, we will be slow trolling with about 3 feet between rod tips.

Mike,
Have you ever spider fished with a set of 12 foot rods with 3 feet between the tips and using only a 1/32 oz jig slow trolling?

The reason that I am asking these questions is that most folks tend to use a fair amount of weight on the end of lines when spider rigging to keep fish from tangling, both when trolling as well as when a fish is caught.

If you are only using a 1/32 oz jig on a 12 foot rod, you can get by with a very light action rod. On the other hand, if you troll with a 12 foot rod and a significant weight on the end of the line to keep lines from tangling, you need a much more substantial rod with a sturdier butt section to carry the weight, but still have a soft enough tip to detect the light crappie bite.

Take care
Roger

I found some inexpensive 10wt fly blanks a while back, and they are GREAT for crappie fishing. Might want to check around, but I think it was D&E rods, and Mud Hole, where I got mine, but I can't remember.

As tony says, often fly rod blanks can be used for crappie rods as can some of the lighter steel head blanks.

Take care
