stainless steel guides for old freshwater casting rod

Does anybody happen to have any old stainless steel (probably chromed) double footed guides guides without ring inserts?

I am trying to restore a 50 yr old True Temper, all steel, fresh water baitcasting rod. I really need 2 or 3 guides with Size 7 or 8 rings; 1 - Size 10; and 1 - Size 12. I happen to have the original tip top.

It's a long shot request I know.

Thanks for looking around.

You might want ot check the closeout part of some of the site sponsors. I've found deals on several of the old type guides that are great to have around for repairs.

Wiltz:

I might have a few from about 50-60 years ago in the smaller sizes, but if I remember right they are neither stainless nor chromed. They are new, however - or at least never used. I would call them metal. If you are looking for something which would be close to "original equipment" . I would be happy to send some to you gratis.

If you are interested please pm me at pengle@prenova.com.

Wiltz,
Just curious; will you be soldering or thread-wrapping the guides to the rod? If soldering, would the guides need to be certain type metal?

The only guide left on the old rod is the tip top, which was silver soldered to the steel rod. The tip top guide is not attracted by a magnet, so I am guessing that it is stainless, and probably chrome plated.

I can tell that the missing 5 guides were originally attached to the rod with thread wraps because parts of the old thread wrappings remained on the rod in places. Back in those days, thread wraps were covered with shellac or varnish. Therefore, I was planning to re-attach replacement guides, if I can locate some, with thread wraps, followed by varnish coating.

When that's all done, I plane to attach the Shakespeare Marhoff Model 1964, direct drive casting reel; spool it back up with the original multi-color, dacron (?) line; and se it the old rig will fool a current-day bass. This is a hoot!

See ya

Wiltz I had a guy come up to me after church and give me several small zip-lock bags with old style guides. I can look when I get home but I think I have both gold and silver. Like others I'm not sure if they a stainless or not but I will look. Keep this post up to date and let us know if you find them. I like the old stuff and find it interesting to have a guy come in and say "this was my Grandfathers, can you fix it?" Good stuff, Good history of our craft.

I have a few in different sizes. Not sure if there are any 7 or 8 sizes, but I am sure I have some of the bigger sizes. You can email me at trinity_bass@yahoo.com
Leave me a mailing address and I will try to get some sent out early next week.

Thanks everybody for all your help.

Member, Whit Engle, has reported that he has some real old guides that sound like they may be what I am looking for. He is mailing me some, so when I receive them I'll update this post and let you know if they worked out or not.

Thanks again.

This is a message to Gabe Neal, who replied earlier to this topic.

At your convenience, please drop me an e-mail at wmlengr@consolidated. net. I have another question that I would like to ask you about the old guides you have.

Thanks
