Hello again everyone, I know there have been posts from time to time about removal of reel seats. I have a rod with a broken section that I am sending to the manufacturer for replacement. It looks like I can get a new upgraded rod blank for pretty much the same as the same cost as the blank repair. The blank is oneof the first St Croix SCV's, so the upgrade gets me a nicer finish and the reinforcement improvements they came out with. The rod I would upgrade was built with a very nice REC reel seat on it, held in place with 30 minute epoxy. Has anyone had success removing these by immersion in hot or even boilng water?? With the guides and reel seat salvaged, a cork grip I have on hand, only my time is really invested in the upgrade. Thanks all.

If the rod is dead, I whack off the seat at each end of it with a saw. Then take a small drill bit and drill holes in/around each end of the reel seat in between the seat and arbor-in the glue line. Do this from each end with as many holes as you can-only takes a few minutes, then you can pop the arbor out with the blank still in it. Clean up the inside of the reel seat and you're ready to re-use it.

I have successfully removed reel seat set with epoxy by immersing them in boiling water (reel seat inside ziplock bag) for about 20 min and with some effort the seat came off.

I understand if it does not come off the first time, that you can alternate immersion in the boiling water and ice water to free it up. I have not had to resort to the ice water.

Heck I agree Daune cut the reel seat off the blank and ream it Much faster and some what cleaner. Hot water may distort the seat

However, if it is a warranty replacement from St. Croix, you need to sent the entire rod back, guides and all components.

Call St Croix to make sure.

I never sent an entire rod blank back.....most only want/need 12" on each side of the break and the decal or written make and model if no decal was used.

Is the broken blank a one or two piece? If the top half is being replaced you may get a replacement top half and keep the original bottom half. Just an option.

Looks like I am not eligible for the upgrade, so the reel seat stays on the blank I attached it to in the first place. Thank you all for responsidng to my inquiry. The break is not a warranty item, I broke a perfectly good rod. I am still glad I can get it fixed for a cheap cost and be fishing with it in 3 or 4 weeks.
