Hello All,
How much of a blank's finish can be removed so it can fit inside a ferrule? The blank I want to use has a .92" butt. I want to use a trolling butt with a ferrule that has a .875" inside diameter. This difference is .045" so .0225" thickness to be removed. Can I remove this amount of material off the blank to fit it inside the ferrule plus a little more for room for the epoxy? Or do I need to go up a size in the unibutt or get a smaller blank? The blank is a Calstar Grafighter if that makes a difference. thanks Re: Removing Finish to Fit Blank into Ferrule

You can remove all of the finish without harming anything. I wouldn't remove any of the actual blank material, however. I know some will grind down the outside of the butt to fit, but beyond a certain point this could possibly be asking for trouble. Frankly, I wouldn't do it.

Yeah, I wouldn't feel comfortable removing anything other than the finish (clearcoat/paint). I guess I need to find out how think it is. Re: Removing Finish to Fit Blank into Ferrule

it would probably be wiser to call your supplier and exchange either the blank or the handle.
Beets having the blank fail . Bill - willierods.com Re: Removing Finish to Fit Blank into Ferrule

I talked with Leon at Calstar last night and he said removing a little bit of the finish should be enough to get the blank to fit in the ferrule. So I should be all set. I will report back once I have done it. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
