EVA inlays

Can I use epoxy to stick the inlay in then "roll over the inlay to "bed it" wipe off the excess and then bind with masking tape until dry
Or will it just split out?
Reason i ask is rubber cement "evo stick" is flexible but when the grip is on the rod and glued with epoxy it only just compresses with no flex so I`m wondering in the advantage of rubber cement
Grip has t be sanded after to flatten inlay out so excess epoxy can be removed then

Cheers
Allen

Epoxy leaves a hard edge. It will be uncomfortable and doesn't like flex.

Not sure why you would use rubber cement for such a thing - it's not going to hold up.

The thing to use is Weldwood Contact Cement. On inlay patterns, you'll coat both, perhaps even a couple of times, allowing dry time between each coat. Then go back and coat the pattern back and install while the cement is still wet so you can move/work it a bit.

right cheers tom Do you have EVO STICK over in the states or not ???? if so (being a contact cement) would this be better to use or would I be better to use a "construction" adhesive (one with a mastic"y" like feel On the grounds that we dont have WELDWOOD in the UK
do you just use a normal cork grip handle clamp to glue up eva or is there a more specialised tool??

Are you doing ring inlays, or a pattern in the grip surface?

For rings, just coat both surfaces and let dry. Then slide on a mandrel for alignment and jam them together. You really don't need a clamp, just put good pressure on them.

Allen I have a very good friend in the UK who I have taught inlays to many years ago and he is really into it. He also is a retired UK policeman (bobby) and he is now in the custom rod building business. He writes a fishing column and goes to other countries to teach them how to fish. He does superior work and I consider him one of the best rod builders I have known. He knows where to get all kinds of material in the UK and elsewhere and he does use Contact cement. His name is Chris Ward and he lives in Horndean Watertoovile
