Tiger/Holo Wrap Article
Posted by: Tom Kirkman (Moderator)

The Tiger and Holographic wraps which so many have enjoyed these past couple years were introduced to the rod building craft by Scott Throop and Bill Colby in the pages of RodMaker Magazine. The Volume 10 #2 issue, which contained those articles, is nearly sold out at this point. To that end, I have put both articles, in their entirety, in our online library here. These are the complete, in-depth articles which most of the resulting “tutorials’” were derived from. In addition, they contain the little tips and tricks that can make all the difference between a great effect and a not so great effect. Many of the problems often read about folks having with the wraps is easily corrected with the information found in these original articles.

The articles are complete and very in-depth and I included some color photos with them. So give the pdf file a few seconds to fully load. You can access the articles in the online library now. Both are contained in the same pdf file.

How long do you have to wait for it to load? After several minutes the page is still blank.

On a dial up connection it may take a few minutes since the file is 1.8 mb. On high speed connections it should be loaded in about 15 to 30 seconds.

And it's also possible that several dozen people are all downloading the same file at the same time. If you can't get it load at all, wait a bit and try again later.

There is still articles in that issue that IMHO containe value worth the back-issue
price. To put the flagship articles for 10.2 up on the Library page here goes above
& beyond! I salute you.

Right, there were also articles on how to determine the proper number of guides for any rod, and another full size grip template. A few other things as well.

One thing I would like to see, is for the names of the authors, Scott and Bill, associated with these wraps. Instead of referring to the wrap as a "Tiger Wrap," it would be nice to see it referred to as a "Throop Tiger Wrap." I would also mention that Bill was quite up front about the fact that while he didn't learn the technique from Scott (Bill's article actually arrived on my desk first) he did say that he knew that Scott had been doing them longer than he had.

These guys didn't make any money off these wraps and were nice enough to give away the information on how to do them. Sort of like Rich Forhan's Locking Wrap. The least guys could do is give them credit. It's not much, but it's nice when you come up with something and can at least have your name associated with it.

The most astounding thing about the article was that those two guys arrived at the same end point from entirely different perspectives without collaboration. This is the first case of the chicken and the egg getting to the plate at the same time.

Even funnier, is that Bill's system of spacing the top wrap, is what I now use. But Bill switched to Scott's method of using 2 threads and removing 1 of them after he read Scott's article.

Hats off to you, Tom, for making this all so easily available to all rod builders, and thanks again to Scott and Bill for sharing it all with us in the the first place, in the original magazine articles. I for one have used this technique which produces such subtle results on many of my rods!

Tom-
Perhaps Scott's name could be added to Library article listing for a little more credit given where due. I like seeing things added to the Library-just not able to get all the back issues-as the numbers on other back issues dwindle perhaps key items could be selected from some of them.

His name is plainly on the article, twice.
