I wrapped a sample of FH Golden Rod and Blue Dun on an old high gloss black scrap I had. Used 2 coats of CP and let dry overnight. I put the FC high build on next day and the results were quite good, much better than I thought color held up very well with no discernable transparency.
As Tom noted in his response. Wraps must be very tight, the smallest gap does show up. So I'm off to wrap my second fly rod ( and improve my wrapping skills) thanks for all the help. Eric Re: Follow up to Light thread -dark blank ?

Tom
I read somewhere once that you could "sand" the finish off a dark blank down to the grey primer coat and wrap on that. When you cover with epoxy then it reseals the rod. Is this correct or is it duff imformation Cheers Allen Re: Follow up to Light thread -dark blank ?

I guess that would be okay, but I'd never put a piece of sandpaper on a thin wall graphite blank to begin with. Not much room for error and it's the outer fibers that carry most of the load. I wouldn't want to damage them.
Everybody has their own way of doing things. When using dark colored blanks I tend to just adjust my thread colors so I don't have bleed problems. I use darker thread for the main wraps and limit my lighter colors to trim wraps. Even then I sometimes use NCP for those trims. .......... Re: Follow up to Light thread -dark blank ?

I had a similar situation in which I wanted royal blue wraps over dark grey blanks. On the first go around I used color preserver. The look was OK, but the wraps had a one dimensional look. On the next blank, I painted the blank silver under the location of the wraps and then wrapped the guides over the silver. The difference was dramatic. The wraps maintianed the royal blue color, but had the translucent, three dimensional look you get when you don't use color preserver. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
