Hello,
I want to built a travelrod of a 7" 3pcs blank. I´m planing to do a SIMPLE SPIRAL, but the first ferrule is about there where I want to put my bottom guide. What should I do? I found three solutions: -Put the bottom guide so close to the reel that the first 180° guide will be before the ferrule. Question: How close can I put the bottom guide to the reel? Is there some rule like the 27x on spinningrods? -Put the bottom guide after the ferrule. -Put bottom guide in front and first 180° guide after the ferrule. One little fly guide would be on the female part of the ferrule so line won´t touch the blank. BUT having the ferrule in between the "transition" will that not result in twisting or loosening the pieces of the blank? Please help me out on that one. Any suggestions are welcome. Greetings Max Re: 3pcs blank -can ferrule be in the middle of the transition when spiral wrapping it?

Spiral wrapped rods don't twist - that is the main point in doing them that way.
If you have read up on the Simple Spiral, you know about where the 2nd (first 180 degree guide) goes. If it lands on the ferrule, then put it on the ferrule. It's fine there. ............... Re: 3pcs blank -can ferrule be in the middle of the transition when spiral wrapping it?

Tom, sorry for my english, but the more complicated it gets, the more obvious it will be that I´m not a native speaker.
I don´t mean twisting. It´s the torsion movement that I´m worried about that might ocure in the ferrule even when using a simple spiral. I understand the simple spiral (at least I think/hope so). But I think even in the best built simple spiral there will be torsion, even if it´s not strong. But if the ferrule is in between the bottem and the first 180 guide that little torsion could make the pieces of the blank move. I don´t wonna be a smart a.., but pieces of blanks allready loosen only by casting. Greetings Max Re: 3pcs blank -can ferrule be in the middle of the transition when spiral wrapping it?

There will be no twisting or "torsion movement" if you use a spiral wrap - any load from a fish will hold the rod stable.
Conversely, if you put all the guides on top, there will be twisting and possibly loosening of the ferrule when loaded by a fish as the guides attempt to turn to the bottom of the rod. ........... Re: 3pcs blank -can ferrule be in the middle of the transition when spiral wrapping it?

I also often locate my guides on multi-piece blanks such that guide wraps double as ferrule wraps. Re: 3pcs blank -can ferrule be in the middle of the transition when spiral wrapping it?

Max,
I love it when a guide placement falls on a ferrule and it's even better when doing the "simple" spiral wrap configuration when the stripper/butt guide and bumper fall on the first section and all other guides fall on the other section or sections. A "bumper/spiral" configured in that way on multi-piece rods allows you to fish the rod both in a "all guides up" config. or "guides down" config. just by rotating the forward sections. Raymond Adams Eventually, all things merge, and a river runs through it.. Re: 3pcs blank -can ferrule be in the middle of the transition when spiral wrapping it?

Max,
Tape the guides to the rod blank and load it. Watch what happens - nothing. The one sure way to put your mind at ease is simply to try it for yourself. ............. Re: 3pcs blank -can ferrule be in the middle of the transition when spiral wrapping it?

simple spiral, guides up , guides down, revolver, .........a snug ferrule is going nowhere.
That ferrule is flexing & has sideload from the leverage of the top , basically the friction in the ferrule induced by tip load is far greater than any radial forces from any guide train. The only way you can get into trouble is if you did something silly like but lashings of Cals grease on that ferrule. On a good spiral wrap, there will be no radial forces from the guides trying to twist the rod - just the opposite. The guides are already on the bottom so the lever arm effect of the guides holds the rod stable under load from a fish.
On a conventional guides-on-top rod, there would be some attempt (or even success) in the rod trying to twist as the guides attempt to turn and move to the bottom of the rod in order to face the direction the load is being applied from. But on a spiral wrap, the guides are already facing the load from any fish. They're already on the bottom and no twisting will occur. ...............
