How far from the bottom of the tip section can the ferrule wrap be? A friend is building a rod and he wants to start the ferrule wrap over 3/8" from the bottom of the tip section. That seems like quite a distance for such a critical wrap. I always put mine as close as I can to the bottom.

I would get it as close to the end as you can get it. I would think that it would be pretty hard to prevent a split out that far away

Mike is right, it should be as close as possible on a tip-over ferrule. If it is going to crack it will start in that 3/8" gap!

It's there to prevent a split out so it needs to be at the edge of the ferrule.

If you read the article on ferrules in a recent RodMaker, you now know which companies do not require ferrule reinforcement wraps. A few still recommend them, however.

I always wrap as close to the edge of the female ferrule as possible and think it's probably a bad idea to start a ferrule wrap 3/8" back from the edge.That said,if your friend wants to keep the wrap back from the end of the ferrule strictly for cosmetic purposes maybe he could do a under wrap tight to the edge of the blank with a thread that would blend right in to the color of the blank and then do his decorative wrap over that one and keep it 3/8" back from the ferrule end.

Silk without CP in either white or the color of the blank would blend in very well with the blank and be hardly noticeable(especially on a gloss finished blank),while offering added protection from a split out at the same time.The silk is very fine and lightweight,yet very strong so it wouldn't add much weight to the rod.Nylon in the color of the blank and without CP would also work I would think but would be slightly heavier and thicker,and not quite as transparent.
