Size of first 180° guide on a spiral with micros

Hello,

I´m about to make my first spiral wrapped rod and I´m not sure what size I should use for the first 180° guide. I´ll use a size 10 or 8 as bottom guide on top, a 8 or 7 fly on the side and size 4 flys till the top. Should I use a 4 as first 180° or better a larger one since the line might move to the edge in that guide?

Thanks for helping me out

Max

I use a 4 as my first bottom guide. I use a double 6, 5 to transition, 4 and then 3s to the tip.

On mine all guides on the 180 are the same size. i just finished one that was 6, trans 5, 4.5 , and 3.5 to the tip. works great. what kind of spiral are you using. i like two transition guides myself.

With braid as small as you are talking about using, I think the 4 will be fine. I would use a 7 as the transition guide given that the 7 (at lease in the alconite) has the ring right against the blank as opposed to the 8 which has some height to the leg, which means the line must move farther out to the side. Also, on that 66MLF that you are building, the butt is pretty firm so I doubt the line would move up or down very much in the transition guide when you go from no-load to full-load.

Max;
Unless you are building it as a flipping stick I would suggest you do what Robert and Stu said either set up will work fine. I've used those set ups on rods using Mono or Floro up to 20 lbs and braids up to 50 lbs. with great results.
