I have tried putting a thicker coat on but it still foloows thread is nylon with 2 coats of CP

It will be higher on top of the thread than in the open areas between the threads. That's just the way it's going to be.

If you want a flat surface finish, you're going to have to make a flat wrap (closed wrap). Or, you can build up multiple layers of epoxy, block sanding and repeating, until the low areas are filled and level with the areas on top of the thread. There are your 2 options.

Once you have a couple coats on and dry, add another coat over it, take a playing card and level out the fresh coat by holding it's edge on the wrap as the rod turns. You're basically pulling off all the wet finish on the high areas and leaving the finish where it's needed in the low areas.

What I do with a open pattern is this, fil in all the low areas first wait till it stars to get tacky then following the thread pattern in one direction I apply a coat, then reverse and fill in the other pattern going in the opposite direction after that fill in any low spots and level off

It works well Bill, I have used it on long wraps to help even them. You'll have to add another coat or so after you do the card trick, it really helps make things flat and even.
