A thin coat of finish on the underwrap is fine. You don't need to thin it, just put it on with a stiff brush - that will only apply a thin coat to your wrap.
This will help a little, but won't completely eliminate your problem. But at least you can burnish or move the threads easier. ................ Re: guide wrapping problem

when you start the wrap leave three or four inchs start `tag` over to the other side of the guide. get five or six turns down then pull the `tag`` round until it lines up with the start of the foot (tightening the start of the wrap as it goes) then SLOWLY wrap onto the foot using the `tag end as a ramp when your abut eight turns on again pull the tag off the foot and trim when you start to come onto the foot TAKE YOUR FEET OFF THE PEDAL do it by hand.
as for packing metalic LOL tell me about it rub like mad and oops its siler and white. try nicking a tip from the weavers armoury ROLL the threads to burnish (flatten) them a short length of stainless steel bar about 1/4" diameter is ideal Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
