Hi Ridge,
There are probably more explanations based on different fishing styles and locales but the basic difference is that the "trolling" is for fighting fish from a chair mounted in the cockpit of the boat and the "stand-up" rod is for fighting a fish while standing up, anywhere on the boat. For stand-up style fishing, you're in a direct tug of war against the fish. With a short enough rod, you reduce the leverage the fish has against you and if you're stronger than he is, you'll whip him quickly.
Offshore trolling entails (usually) a chair which allows much of the fish's power to fall on the chair and harness, taking a good deal of strain off the angler. Longer rods are (and can be) employed even though the fish has a giant leverage advantage. In a chair, a longer rod is generally needed to keep the line clear of the transom. Both are great ways to fish, but the rod used for one is not very suitable for the other. ............. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
