New to Color Preserver - a little help please?

I have never used much CP other than for feather inlays. After starting to use it on some wraps, I am noticing a lot of what appear to be micro-bubbles in the rod finish over the CP, giving almost a hint of a cloudy condition. My finishes over straight nylon thread always look great.

I mix my epoxy with a Pac Bay mixer, and then pour in to a 3" alum. tart pan. The finish is warmed before mixing. I use both FC Hi-Build and Threadmaster finishes with no issues over bare thread. I have used both Flex Coat CP and Chromaseal. I generally do two thin coats of finish.

Any ideas why the micro-bubbles show up over the thread with CP?

They may be in your CP. Don't shake it prior to use, just stir if you need to.

Marc-how long did you let the CP dry? If you used more than one coat of CP how long between coats? Had the CP been exposed to some very low temps? Just tossing some stuff out there.

When I need to mix the CP if it's been sitting, I generally roll the bottle along the table, no shaking. I did only one coat of CP, and let it dry a couple hours at about 74 deg room temp.. Do multiple coats of CP really help? I seem to get good color retention with just one coat.

Thanks for the quick responses!

If one coat gives you the color retention you are looking for then one is enough. Most manufacturers would recommend overnight for drying, erring on the safe side. Allow it to dry until color returns to the color thread was on the spool. Test on a scrap of blank allowing to dry longer to see if that is whats causing the problem.

I agree with Chris,

Let the first coat completely dry before adding a second coat.
