Banty Fly Rod Set-up

I am dropping the butt section of a bamboo Shakespeare 1326-9'. It's just too much of a club in its original configuration. I am turning into a small creek fly rod.
The rod will be 6 feet long, and probably throw a 2 or 3 weight, based on CCS. Didn't measure the actual AA, but it's sloooooow, as a 2 piece. My question: is there anything different or noteworthy concerning setting up guides on a small fly rod, as opposed to a longer one? Re: Banty Fly Rod Set-up

I am building a 6ft 2wt as we speak...well not exactly...I'm taking a "study break"...I had to try a few different configurations with the guide placement because of the flexibility and the length. I have never built a rod this small save for one Ice rod.
But other than that I have had no other issues.. Re: Banty Fly Rod Set-up

Ked,
How many guides do you think you'll end-up using? Just curious; I realize that every blank is unique, and requires its own set-up. George Re: Banty Fly Rod Set-up

6 or 7 is a safe bet. Most likely 6 plus a tiptop.

I woke up this morning, and realized that I had used the CCS incorrectly. Even in a "banty" set-up, the rod has an ERN of around 8. Since I have no use for a short 8 wt, I think I will build as a 9 ft. and use it for bass or pike, whenever my right arm needs a work-out. Re: Banty Fly Rod Set-up

I have built dozens of the cut down banty rods from old bamboo rods. I save enough of the bottom section to build my handle on and ferrule the next section into it to make a detachable handle, This gives me a little more length on the finished rod. Most of mine are from 6.5 ft to 7 ft in length and throw a 3-4 wt line. Stress testing for the guide set up usually give about 7 guides and a tip. If you need more help e-mail me. George,
Sam's advice is right on the money. The detachable handle increases the length of the rod and turns a slow 6-7 wt. six footer into an acceptable 4 wt. Plus, you can really get creative with the handle and produce a unique rod for yourself. Just use the butt ferrule as the winding check. The last one I built from a nine-footer ended up 6'10" and it throws a 4 wt line beautifully. I use it on small creeks. If you keep your 1326 at nine foot, you'll always have to bring another rod with you to give your wrist and your arm a break. Good luck on the build.
