Do you guys recommend wrapping ahead of the tip top on fly rods? Thanks.

I don't wrap the tip on any light rod ... fly or spinning. I only wrap when the top itself requires it, such as MNST style tops with the spur. IMO, wrapping the tip serves no useful purpose, it add unwanted weight AND can make top replacement a bit more difficult.

The main reason to wrap the tip is cosmetic. They can be a pain to wrap. It does add some weight and can make tip replacement more difficult as Jim notes. Re: Wrapping Tiptop

In the past I've done the tip wrap on more decorative rods, but I've always found it to be a little more of a pain to wrap than the running guides, then after finishing it, wondering if it was even worth it. The rod I'm working on now is going to be very "subdued" compared to my past rods, so this'll save a couple of minutes!
Thanks for the input, Folks! John Re: Wrapping Tiptop

I wrap the tiptop's purely for cosmetic purposes. The easiest way I have found to wrap tip tops are to use the small thread spools in a fly tying bobbin and wrap around it with your hand, makes it very easy and quick. Re: Wrapping Tiptop

A rod with no tip wrap looks like the builder didn't finish the job or just didn't care whether he wrapped it or not. The rod just doesn't look completed without a tip wrap. Re: Wrapping Tiptop

Thank you Lance, that has always been my opinion also. Anyone can put a tip on a rod but the custom and professional look is the tip wrap. I will only leave it naked if the customer insists on it, Re: Wrapping Tiptop

I occasionally wrap the tip. Most of my customers don't care one way or the other but the ones that want it get it. If it's a very decorative rod then yes but a guy wanting a plain jane tool it doesn't get wrapped. I don't on my personal rods but then again, rarely do I do much to pretty them up for myself. I probably should add more detail to my own but I'm not nearly as detail oreinted on my stuff.
Black blank w/ black wraps, that's how mine roll. Re: Wrapping Tiptop

Black on black looks nice. It does sparkle with even one turn of matallic trim, in the center Bill - willierods.com Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
