I broke a rod that I had built and I like the decorative wraps that I put on it; a butt wrap and a wrap in the split grip. It broke between the butt guide and the second guide. I have been wanting to build a 9'+ light casting rod. I have a 7' blank in the line weight range that I want, and it just so happens that it fits perfectly over the broken rod after I cut just below the butt guide. The result is a 9'8" 10lb mod-fast 2 pc that has a handle section with my art work, reel seat and split grip that I liked alot. The ferule is about 6" below the butt guide (where I will put it based on static load test). Sooooo......is there any reason that this would not work? The blank is fairly thin walled, but if I make a ferule wrap this would be insignificant, right?
I have ZERO experience with two piece rods, any advice would be appreciated.
BTW, first time I'm goin spiral with micro Batson 3's. The butt guide is a DF alps sz 10, sz 3 bumper, 3's rest of the way and a sz 4 tip.

Thanks all,
Steven

The problem would be that any time you suddenly change the blank's properties in any area you risk failure. If the piece you're sliding over the butt isn't at least similar, you risk a failure at that point. A thin walled blank slid over a thick walled blank, or vice versa, in similar materials and diameters in a location that is expected to see a good amount of flex may not be your best recipe for success.

You are in suck it and see territory.
Tom is right about the risk of stress concentration
The high risk area is where the top of the butt piece in the overlap transitions into your new tip section.
When doing those sorts of jobs ( done quite a few ) I like an overlap of 6 - 7 times the largest diameter of the inside piece to spread the stress & strain. Ditto for spigot ferrules turning one piece rods into 2-piece jobs.
The exterior ferrule wrap significantly helps increase the hoop strength , but is no magic bullet

How good is the taper match of the 2 pieces if its not going to be an epoxied one piece ???
have you chalked the butt and twisted it lightly in the join to check contact area ????

What is the wall thickness of the tip & butt sections at the proposed join area ???
What is the length of overlap relative to the diameter of the butt where it emerges from the ferrule join.????
