How many guides would ya'll expect for a 6 1/2' fast action spinning rod set up NGC with a Shimano 2000 reel? Re: Number of guides for NGC on 5S66MLF?

Probably 7 plus a tiptop. 8 would not be too many, but I can't imagine it taking any more than that.

Marty,
That is one of my favorite blanks. The key thing is to have enough guides to load the tip section properly. Generally, I space the first tip guides on this blank at about 3 1/2 or 4 inches from the tip and on down the rod for the first two or three guides. Then, space out the guides to follow the power of the rod. Depending on the guides and lines being used, I may use guides from 6 to 8. Most of the rods will be built with 7 guides plus the tip. Remember, don't overdo the number of guides. Too many folks just starting out will put too many guides on the rod, and the added guides really do little for the rod except add weight. Take care Roger Re: Number of guides for NGC on 5S66MLF?

My rule of thumb for the fast action Walleye and Bass rods I build is one guide per foot of guide length (rounded up) plus one more guide. Its held true for most any rod in that class.

Marty, I have a CTS model EST781 which is probably similar to the blank you're building (CCS = 12.7/77). Before the micro guide craze, I built it with BYAG20-BYAG10, then 5 x BLAG6, then BFAT6 tip. I fish it with a Quantum size 20 reel and 6lb. trilene XL and I love it. The only thing I would do differently if I built it now would be to use even smaller running guides but there would be no need to change the number. Re: Number of guides for NGC on 5S66MLF?

Matt,
I think you may mean 1 guide per foot of ROD length, not guide length, plus one. I agree: 6' rod = 7 guides and a tip top 6'6" rod = 8 guides and a tip top 7' rod = 8 guides and a tip top 7'6" rod = 9 guides and a tip top 8' rod = 9 guides and a tip top and so on.... Sometimes with a rod that has a lot of power you can get away with one less guide and be fine. DR Re: Number of guides for NGC on 5S66MLF?

Steve,
How far from the spool face to the BYAG20? That sounds like exactly the kind of rod I'm setting up. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
