How do I

remove a rod blank from a reel seat that I want to keep? The reel seat is very old but different enough that I want to re-use it with a new blank. What are some tricks to remove the blank from the seat without damaging the blank or seat?

Thanks,

If it was well installed, you'll have a hard time getting it off without damaging either the blank or the seat.

Heat is about your only easy option. Try heating the seat and hope the adhesive will loosen. A pot of boiling water may do the trick, but it may not.

A heat gun can be used, but keep in mind that you can damage the blank if you apply too much heat.

You can cut the blank off at the front and rear of the seat and bore it out on a lathe or drill press

i would suggest immersing the reel seat in a pot of simmering/near-boiling water and repeatedly try to loosen the seat first. it'll be too hot to touch but wrap a towel around it before grabbing. possibly less chance of damage before a heat gun. i've done this a couple of times with fly rod reel seats and was remarkably easy to do.

Thanks for all the replies so fast. I am going to try the hot water trick first but I might have to cut the blank. Luckily, with this type reel seat, the blank only goes into the seat about 4 inches.

Thanks again,

Steve
