Never Built a Fly Rod

Was wondering is there any outline on how to build a fly rod tip to butt? I am going to build a rod for a co-worker and want to make sure I cover all the differences between a fly rod and a - lets say - saltwater rod. If there is a RodMaker issue that covers this that will work too. Whats a good but not insanely expensive 9' #8 2 piece?

jason

i built a 2 pc 5# 8'6" using a batson forecast blank, it was $36.00 and it casts as good as my $600 winston. batson has a 9' 8# 2pc in the forecast blank for $44. It's a great value and it looks good too. blue gloss finish ,med fast action, it's a great rod. i also landed an 8 lb trout on my 5#, so they are tough too. i got mine at @#$%&.

hope this helps

The steps for building a fly rod are no different than for building a spinning or baitcasting rod. Parts are assembled, guides wrapped and finished the exact same way.

There are some special articles in RodMaker that deal with fly rod guide spacing, but when you come right down to it, the same criteria for guide spacing holds true on about any rod.

You might go out and get your hands on a fly rod and look it over. Get a feel for the way it's laid out. Then you'll be more confident about building one.

Not a big deal. Jason. I like the single foot guides myself, but I have one speced out for snakes as that is what the guy wants. I always order at least one extra guide in case the static test dictates more than the spacing charts call for.
