When the holiday clutter cleared, I had a few minutes to finish the drying motor that I was building.
I had found a couple of 0-50 rpm DC gear motors from an engineering lab. This also included the 90 volt controllers. I built a stand for the motor using aluminum bar stock, and a chuck using a pvc cap and coupler turned down on a lathe to hold a neoprene style rod chuck. I built the controller board into a box, adding a reversing switch and a foot pedal enable switch. I removed the resistor from a sewing machine foot pedal to use only the switch on the foot pedal. This setup allows me to enable the foot pedal, turn up the dial to a fast speed and apply finish. I use the foot pedal as necessary to stop the rod from turning, for those fine spots. Then, without switching anything, I can simply flip the switch to continuous run, and dial down the speed for long term slow drying. A fun project that should work well. If needed in the future, this is a very very heavy duty motor that can easily drive a much larger drum or rotary dryer. The picture is posted in the equipment section. Looks good Roger - I've not gotten around to doing my conversions yet - too darn busy building rods Re: DC drying motor and controls.

Very nice looking setup Roger. Looking to build something like that. Would love a bit more info, like components list, wiring diagram, etc. if it's not too much hassle. Re: DC drying motor and controls.
