If you are looking for a good heavy duty variable speed DC dryer motor, I have an example.
I found this motor that had been used at a University in the engineering lab. I suppose that the Dayton Controller and motor were likely a $200 motor. It is a DC gear motor - with a nominal voltage of 90 volts DC - resulting in an rpm of 50. With the use of the DC controller, the speed may be varied from 0-50 rpm. By the simple addition of a switch, the voltage polarity may be switched to reverse the direction of the motor. This is an example of a motor that is way overkill for a single rod. It would certainly work well, but it would excel if it were used to drive a multiple rod dryer, either in the form of a drum dryer, or a chain or belt driven multi dryer. When I person does some internet searches from time to time, once can come up with some very inexpensive tools to really help the craft. I intened to build it up as a dryer, adding two switches and a foot pedal. One switch will be used to turn on the motor so that it stays on all of the time. In the other position, the foot switch will be enabled, to be able to turn the motor on and off during the application of finish. The 2nd switch will be used to reverse the polarity of the voltage going to the DC motor. For those times when one works from the opposite side of the pole, it is useful to reverse the motor direction. Take care Roger p.s. If any interest, I can post a picture under the equipment page. p.s.
I found a current source for the motor - New - as follows: [kingsolar.com] As I stated earlier, unless I had found such an inexpensive price on this motor - I would never have picked it up to use as a dryer. However, it will make an excellent driver for the new drum dryer that I am building. Take care Roger Re: New Rod drying motor

Roger-Do you-like me-have fun and derive pleasure from designing and building rod building tools? I love the tinkering part.

Chris,
Sometimes I think that making the tools is one of the most interesting parts of the job. Each tool is different and unique and requires a different design technique. Take care Roger Re: New Rod drying motor

Roger,
In terms of both cost and required performance, The motor you cite is an absolute Over Kill! The $17.00 Gear Motor in the link below, will do everything that yours will do. Its rated at 24 RPM at 24 volts DC and it's direction of rotation is reversible. The 24 volts DC can be supplied by a plug-in power supply, which costs about $10.00. The use of 24 volt DC from a plug-in power supply is also a important Safety factor, which can prevent electrocution, whereas the 90 volts required for your motor can kill you!
