I am looking for a blank to cut to 5ft 8inch to make a 30/40lb stand up rod, my 50lb rods are gf755h grafighters with straight unibuts and rollers i am very happy with them
can a calstar gf 760L be cut from the but end to give an overall length of 5ft 8inch with unibutt to give a nice 30/40lb action without moving the shut of point too near to the butt. The rods will have sic guides and double as florida keys shallow water shark/ tarpon tarpon rods, i know that 5ft 8 is a bit short for the keys but these are compromise rods (also will a 760L blank fit into a 0.75 no 1 unibut spigot when cut to give an overall lengthof 5ft 8inch to 5ft 10 inch with unibutt) I have a pair of very nice light 5ft 8inch 20lb stand up rods using gf600m 20-40 blanks and i am looking for something between these and the gf755h rods I have looked at 7460L but this appears as powerfull as the gf755h when cut to 5ft 8inch from the butt end I would like to stick to graphiters for dare i say cosmetic reasons I am a traveling angler so unibutts to reduce the length of the rods in transit are a must also live in England so i just cant go to a dealer and pull on a blank regards Gary Re: cutting calstar 760L for a Standup rod

Gary....May I suggest contacting Cal Star [calstarrods.com] with your questions to be on the safe side. I am not saying someone on this site does not know what to do, but all your suppliers are usually more than willing to offer their expert advise.
Be aware that your warranty may be void as soon as you cut down any blank and yet at times I was advised since I cut a small amount from the end there would be no change in the warranty....it is always best to check. Gary,
Specs for the Calstar 760L are: 760L 6' .840 9 30-80 "Tuna" J/S 40-50 lb. You are only chopping the butt by 5 inches, so really see no reason why the rod wouldn't work just fine for your application. Take care Roger Re: cutting calstar 760L for a Standup rod

I contacted Calstar about cutting 2 inches off the butt of a blank so that it would fit in a gimbal that I had and they informed me that any cutting would void the Calstar warranty. Be careful of that. Re: cutting calstar 760L for a Standup rod

Over here, we disregard the warranty and cropped every GF760L that we build, anywhere from 4" to 12" off the butt. It's a value for money blank
that we can play around with, depending on its application. Seldom heard of any breaking anyway. Cheers, Anthony Lee Re: cutting calstar 760L for a Standup rod

Thank you all for your advice, I think invalidating the waranty has to be disregarded in this case other wise how would you build a rod with a unibut,my main concern was moving the shut off point too near to the but and creating , i think you say a noodle like action- I am looking for a medium fast to fast action
anyhow most of the rods I have broken - and I have broken quite a few - have been due to operator error e.g. High sticking spinning rod on 50lb sting ray. Tree branch much stronger than rod. Should have moved rod THEN reversed car. A friend of mine did actualy try to claim on his holiday insurance for, rod pulled overboard by fish- the insurance did not pay Regards Gary Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
