Pac Bay Minima Guide Weights

Just got my scale in from Harbor Freight, and weighed some guides.

The single foot size 6 fly guide weighed exactly the same as the Hialloy ceramic version - 0.2 g, so no real savings to be had here.

The up side is they will be available down to size 4's, the design looks like it would be near impossible to pop a ring, and the black frame/gold ring is really sharp.

Still really worth a look still, and the smaller sizes will offer weight savings.

I know Pac Bay is working on the new catalog, but I don't know if it will be out by the end of the year. I'll try to post some pic's this weekend. Other than that I don't think they are anywhere to be seen yet.

Marc: If you would be so kind as to weigh all the different sizes have and be prepared to share the information on the M&M Micro Guide Thread Volume 3 that will be posted Friday around noon it would be greatly appreciated. All sized from eight rings down would be of interest. If possible, please weigh 10 of each to determine an average weight. The previous volumes of the thread have data for Batson and Fuji guides and the additional information would be quite helpful. Thanks

Bill I would be glad to, except I don't have all the sizes yet. Right now the only smaller size I have are the 7's in the M style frame and 6's in the fly style. I'll be glad to post those.

There are photos of the guides in the new issue of RodMaker due out in a couple weeks. The Pacific Bay advertisement has some good images.

I'm sure they'll also have a full selection on hand at the Expo in February although they'll be shipping them well before then.

Shouldn't we place the weight measurement of the guides on the shoulders of the manufacturers. They should be responsible for providing technical data to make our jobs easier and to compete fairly with the other suppliers. If weight is measured it should be done and published by them to assure we can properly choose the correct components for our customer's use.
If weight is an issue grains are a much more accurate unit of measurement
1gram = 15.43 grains
1 ounce = 437.5 grains

We really shouldn't do their job for them. This will only leave an open door of excuses starting with the care, calibration, and periodic certification of our own measuring devices as to their absolute accuracy. All scales when new should be accurate to their warrantied level but over time and or abuse this is subject to change.

The only reason I can see they wouldn't want to is that their components may come out unfavorably in the market but that is the key to capitalism. Our dollars speak in large volumes and the best man should win with the losers stepping-up their levels of achievement giving us even better choices for the future.

Gene no rodbuilder could argue the point with you! Please take a look at [www.rodbuilding.org]. I have talked to representatives of Batson and Fuji previously concerning this very matter. Hopefully they will respond on this board that they are intune with the needs of the custom builders needs for the micro market. I will contact Pac Bay on Monday and ask for their direct participation.

Thank you for you comment - it is exactly on target and maybe will convince them to provide the numbers needed.

I am curious at this point - Gene, had you seen the previous M&M post?

Bill,
After following the thread I do recall reading the article.
I didn't expect people to rush off and gather data which is an overwhelming task for any individual.
Let the manufacturers do their job which is what we need them to do for our hard earned dollars.
Let's see if any are willing to really step to the plate.
More technical information and less marketing hype.

We'll decide the winners since we accept responsibility for our creations.

I assume your earlier requests fell on deaf ears.
They should not be allowed to side step this issue. We're not stealing trade secrets that any of their competition couldn't accomplish if they really wanted to win the big prize. Our dollars.
