I'm in the process of making a 3 piece spinning rod out of a single 6'6" SPG785-GB blank using Ralph O'Quinn's article on ferrules as my guide. I have some broken rod parts that I want to use, but can't tell graphite from fiberglass by looking at the pieces. What characteristic should I be looking for to separate one from the other.
Thanks, Re: Graphite/ Fiberglass differences

Glass will probably be gloss white, gloss black, honey gold, or brown and some other colors, but the inside fibers will usually be a much lighter color as the coloring is usually just a paint of some kind. The honey gold could be just a varnish over raw material. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 11/26/2008 04:12PM by Spencer Phipps. Re: Graphite/ Fiberglass differences

Right, the graphite (carbon fiber) rods will be dark charcoal. Glass will generally be a white or tan color. Scrape the finish off and have a look, or just peek up inside the butt.
