Refinishing a solid glass rod?

Hi All!
I am refinishing a solid glass rod from 1940. The fiberglass seems to have taken on a yellow-ish stain or discoloration. The blank area where the wraps once were, is almost transluscent white. The rest of the rod is yellow. I think that the discoloration may be due to UV. I have tried scraping with a razor, rubbing with a nylon abrasive pad, and even tried a little isopropyl alcohol, but I cannot remove the discoloration. Any ideas on how I might restore the rod to its original color?
Thanks,
George

I suspect that it is a permenant change - deep in the glass due to uv radiation.
The best way to restore it is to replace the blank with a new one of later vintage.

Take care
Roger

I have been restoring some snagging rods for a couple of clients, the only way I can make them look correct is to sand them and paint em. So far they have turned out great, but then again I do a good amount of air brushing also.

I think I will try coating it with Perma Gloss, tinted green.

99% chance that you won't like it AND you will have to work that much harder to restore it. Tinting Permagloss leaves you with a translucent finish. Odds are VERY good that you will see the color variations underneath the new coating. I would suggest you sand, prime, paint and clear coat. It really isn't difficult at all and the results are great with a bit of proper technique and the correct common materials.

Jim,
Here's to the 1 percenters...
I am actually trying to achieve a transluscent effect. The discoloration is very uniform, and I hope that a green tint will mellow the yellow, and compliment a dun blue reel seat and matching thead.
