I use Tru-Oil almost exclusively. Don't confuse it with a regular "oil" type finish - it dries hard and can be built up to any depth you desire.

Threadmaster or Flexcoat , put it on and turn on the dryer just like you do your wraps . When and if it gets scratched up , sand it , recoat and it is like new again . Re: coating wood handles

Tru-Oil
permagloss TM lite or a conventional uerethane type finish I've used them all, and generally like tru-oil for ease of application. I apply it on the lathe once I've turned the wood to shape with a cloth in thin layers with a light sanding in between Re: coating wood handles

I really like Tru Oil but this is fast becoming my favorite [www.woodturnerscatalog.com] Do a search here on wood finishes and select All Dates and you will get a LOT of info. Mike (Southgate, MI) If I don't want to, I don't have to and nobody can make me (except my wife) cuz I'm RETIRED!! Re: coating wood handles

I use Minwax polyurethane (oil based) semi-gloss with 0000 steel wool between coats. How many coats I apply depends on the porousity of the wood. Re: coating wood handles

I like to use super glue (CA) it's rock hard, durable and start to finish (once you get the hang of it) 15 minutes and it can be installed on a rod. I've been playing with it and find you can touch it up or apply after the fact easily as well. Re: coating wood handles

Hi Sir, I after years of building fly rod reel seats I have found that a 3 part finish works best for us we use Permalyn finishes from Laure mt. firdt is a sealer that realy penatrates the wood even stabilzed wood then the finish of permalyn finish 4 coats, then there liquied wax coat. these finishing products are scretch, water resistance and are like a armor coating for wood I have also use these same finishes on custom made shotgun and rifle stocks for 20 yrs they give you a deep hand rubbed finish you can take a look at them at www.store.laurelmountainforge.com and I always use stabilized woods for all reel seats Re: coating wood handles

Hello Jeffrey,
If you wouldn't mind, I'd like to hear more about your use of Permalyn. Please email me at PENZZZ@msn.com. Thanks, Jeff Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
