Interesting info Tom. Thanks for sharing that. Frankly that surprises me, but I also think there are a whole lot of "lurkers" that are subscribers. It's really too bad they don't contribute.

Not sure about that. You know, I'm on first name basis with a lot of the people who run very large outdoor sporting goods companies. All have great websites, but nearly all tell me that it's their catalogs that generate the sales. They place very little overall importance on the internet.

I remember a few years ago Jim Cabela asked me about getting the RodMaker Magazine mailing list. They really wanted it, but had no interest in the list from this site (the largest and most popular of any custom rod building website). He said something to the effect of "The serious rod builders; the serious buyers, are those who buy the magazine. Website guys are tire kickers."

It's hard to make generalizations that are perfectly accurate, such as that one, but I understand what he meant. When I tally the registrations from the Expo each year, I find very few that are registered here in attendance. But the magazine subscriber lists makes up something like 60% or better of the entire attendance.

As I said, these are 2 entirely different demographics. Both good, but very different on all counts.

I agree with Tom. Those how have foubd the web site are generally newbies with no conection to other builders. The others are the one who want to share. But some times it is fustrating, When you read certain questions. An the answer is in search. As for the mag. I read it to up date my skills.
Good Wraps Bob
