Spine dots Sage rods

Hello Guys,

I'm going to build a Sage Xi2 which arrived today. It's got these white dot's on the blank. Is this the pre determined spine of the blank? Is it to be trusted or would youadvice me to determine it myself and go with that. I find it hard to determine the spine because this blank is so stiff.

How can I get rid of the dots? Are they water or alcohol soluble?

Thanks for your help, I appreciate it!

Eric

They are straightest axis not the spline. Sage has never done that with their rods, Loomis and many others the same way.

Sage uses the alignment dots to mark the straightest axis. They do not spine their rods, nor do most of the commercial rod manufacturers.

They can be scraped off with a fingernail and a little alcohol.

I have never trusted any mfg. when they dot their blanks....I rub off the dots with denatured alcohol and on the stuborn ones I scrape with a finger nail after the alcohol softening and rub another coat of alcohol and they should disapear. After that I eyeball the natural curve of the blank and mark with a white grease pencil....no problem....if no white grease pencil you can use a white or yellow carpenters crayon or swipe a kids crayola. {when they aren't looking of course}

Spencer and Tom type twice as fast [or more] than me but I will add that I have found that Sage has at times been off of the natural and Loomis has been blind on their marks....again, use your own eyeball then you are sure. Dang !!! where is Bob Balcombe at when you need a spell checker???

All of the above is correct.

Find the spine for your self, if you want to and rub the little dots off.

I do.
