Ferrule plug?

Hi guys,

I'm going to build a #9 Sage Xi2, which arrived today. I noticed that the "male" ends of the ferules aren't closed with this foam like substance like you see on the factory rods. I can actually look through the blank, is this normal? Should I close these or not? If they are to be closed, what material should I use for this?

Thanks, I appreciate your help!

Eric

I would close it. By closing the hole you eliminate dirt and water getting inside. Also if you are fishing in a cold freezing weather, and you had water trapped inside the rod it could freeze and damage the rod. I would glue a piece of cork in the hole.

Eric, cork is good. I always glue in a piece of O-Ring material the correct diameter. You can get it at any Auto Parts Store. If I don't have a piece the right dia. I will trim a larger piece with a razor blade and make it fit. Glue in , trim flush or almost flush and that's it.
Something else I did a couple times. Knocked the primer out of a spent 30-06 rifle case, sharpened the open end of the case with a fine cut file and cut a slug from a scrap piece of EVA, fit like a knew glove. And you can always use a larger caliber if need be.

Jay I use old metal Ferrule to cut my plugs from Cork, Evaor or a old rubber bike tire. I like Jay bevel the edges.

Just fill the end with whatever epoxey glue you use.

Stand it on end for a day or so with some tape over it so it will not flow out.

Clean up with some fine wet and dry if necessary.

Easy and cheap method.
