Can any one or will any one tell me how hard or what kind of steel Lamar Mandrels are made out of?
Are they soft, medium or hard steel?

Tim,

Most turning mandrels are made from drill steel blanks. I have some Lamar mandrels and some drill steel mandrels made by a local machinist and for all practical purposes I can't see any difference.

WATER HARDENED INDICATES THEY ARE PROBABLY VERY HARD. THIS MEANS THAT THEY ARE MADE FROM A MILD STEEL, THEN HEATED UP (DEGREE OF HEATING WILL DETERMINE HARDNESS WHEN QUENCHED). QUENCHING WITH WATER WILL COOL THE METAL EXTREMELY FAST, MAKING IT VERY HARD. IF YOU QUENCHED WITH OIL OR SOMETHING THAT WILL COOL IT DOWN SLOWER IT WOULD BE LESS HARD. SO THE HOTTER YOU GET THE METAL AND THE FASTER YOU COOL IT DOWN, THE HARDER IT GETS. ALSO, DIFFERENT GRADES OF METAL WILL ALSO HELP DETERMINE HARDNESS.
