i want to build a short fiberglass rod to cast a wf1 line. Most casts will be less than 30ft. I was thinking about using the lamiglass fl8436 and dropping the butt section. The common cents data for that blank shows an ERN of around 2.5 i believe. I am assuming dropping the butt section will lower the ERN. Ideally, I would like the blank to have an ERN close to that of the dan craft frsIII61013 (1.6).

Why not drop the butt section and then take the measurement?

Perhaps you don't have the blank yet. It would be hard to say what the ERN might be without the butt section. A guess would just be a guess. All I could tell you is that the ERN would definitely drop considerably if you drop the butt section. But by how much I really couldn't say.

You are correct in that I don't have that blank yet. I will order the blank and play around with it a bit. Another option i thought about would be to shorten the butt section. What I am thinking about now is shortening the butt section a couple inches at a time and measuring the ERN until I get something close to 1.6. Thanks for the advice, I was pretty sure that taking away from the butt section of the blank would lower the ERN, however i wanted to ask the experts here to make sure my thinking was correct.

You can just slip the butt section back beyond the blank holder and take the measurement - no need to cut it. Just refigure the needed deflection amount by subtracting the amount you have beyond the rear of the blank holder. Use 1/3rd of that amount for the deflection.

When you find what you want, cut the blank there.
