Recoils on a GLX MB844

I have a customer that would like a GLX MB844 built with recoils. I havent used these on anything but a spinning rod. Any suggestions as to size and style? I was going to just use the same size guides I use for a conventional setup just in the recoils, just curious what others have used.

Scott;
This may not be much help, but I just removed a set of recoils off a GLX 803 rod for a client the inside dimensions are just a little under to this.

He said they kept tearing up his line so I replaced them with Micro’s

Scott,
I built several casting rods using the Recoils last year. I used the SINGLE foot RSPG’s in sizes 10, 8 and 6’s to the tip. I used a Fuji TFST 5.5 tip top. One of the rods received heavy use this summer and the guides seemed to hold up very well…..caught many 5 lb+ bass. I am switching back to Fuji Ti’s and micros, but I can’t say the Recoils didn’t perform satisfactorily. I just prefer the Fuji’s and the micros are lighter than the Recoils. When I removed the Recoils, I closely examined them for wear and found none, but I’m sure they’d eventually show signs of wear with continued use. Btw, I use braided line.

You can find the I.D.’s and weights of the Recoils on Mike Barkley’s website

Scott

I had a customer recently who just "had to have" the recoils. He was close enough to me that we got together on the lake and compared the same blank with recoils (borrowed from friend) and micros.

It took him two casts before he decided on the micros. He now has six of the micro rods.

Thanks for the info guys. I agree with you on guide choice, but he has a factory one with recoils and loves them, just wants different grips basically. If the guys lived anywhere near me I would take him fishing, but he lives in FLA. Thanks for the help, that is along what I was thinking for guide size. Planed on using an SIC tip.

I have 2 bait casters with recoil guides and have not had any problems with them.

One thing about the recoils is they can save your client some money because you're not replacing guides when the get stepped on or damaged in some other mysterious ways that I haven't figured out. I do repairs for friends and currently have 5 Loomis rods from one friend getting guides replaced. He'd have recoils on every rod if he could.
