I have never done this in 30 years of rod building

As you know I like to use a butane torch to break bubbles in finish. Well I always told people using flam to watch out. Tonight I was breaking bubbles on custom rod. I got distracked for just a second! You guessed it I melted a $##@%&*(( rod. I have never melted or even burnt a rod in over 30 years of rod building . So guy/gals watch out for flames.

I melted the tip section, right in the middle. Guides are fine. Now I have to order a new tip section. Which means I have to send the whole rod back so they can match me a new top. I have not drank hard lacquer in 32 years. I think I just feel off the wagon

Bugger! Now melting a tip could get me to drink something, but hard lacquer doesn't figure highly on my list! I did melt 1/2 inch off my fly rod replacing the tip last week though. And that was with a ciggy lighter. I know for sure that I don't belong anywhere near a butane torch.

Hard Laquer is tough to drink. I prefer my laquer in a liquid state, with a little ice. :-)

Nice to hear from you Bob. Put your torch away though.

Bob,
Is your computer close by? Are you sure that the heat was not coming from the spell checker in your computer? I know that it generates a lot of heat when attempting to correct your spelling.

Bob,

"I melted the tip section, right in the middle. Guides are fine. Now I have to order a new tip section. Which means I have to send the whole rod back so they can match me a new top."
------------

It is interesting that you have to send the whole rod back in order to match a new tip. I would think this speaks volumes about the precision and quality control of that manufacturer.

I suppose it is too much to hope that you might have measured the CCS values or determined the BIG Picture for your blank before starting to work on it. Without that information, you have no way of determining whether the "new tip" will produce a rod anything like your original. A word to the wise.

Sorry Bob! Don’t feel bad I have heard this story at least ten times in the last 20 years. I personally only seem to burn the bill of my hat so made note to self turn my hat around before burning bubbles LOL..

Treat yourself to a little ' Weller' butane Porta-Sol P-1K kit to do your epoxy heating stuff & tip removals etc
it comes with 3 heads:-
- soldering head ( very useful on the boat for elect connections)
- butane burner
- hot air burner
The hot air burner in the kit is a little catalytic type burner head that has no flame & just outputs hot CO2 & has a good range of temp adjustment.
More than worth a look............ its been an essential part of my kit for a decade.
Even the simple things have seen technology changes
- candle > alcohol burner > butane pencil torches>hair dryer > elect heat gun > butane catalytic burner hot air guns.
No nano burners yet though............. but I can feel the hype coming on.
