50-80 lb trolling rod blank

A customer is asking me to build him some rods for his new boat. He is looking for 50-80lb blanks with a soft tip. It is also going to be used with the Aftco stora butts with a straight and a curved. So overall length should not be more then a standard IGFA trolling blank. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Scott

Scott, I can get GUSA 4' unibutt blanks which are rated 30-60# and 50-130#

Here's a pic of the URC40H with 30#'s hanging off the tip: [northeastrodbuilders.com]
I just sold a dozen of these to someone up in Massachusettes.

Good timing Scott, I am building a couple of stand up rods, one is a 50# and one is a 20#. I choose the Rainshadow® Saltwater Regulation Trolling Rod Blanks and never looked back.

Scott the IGFA blanks are primarily set up for trooling rods. If your customer is after standup rods you should check out the article in Rodmaker on building that style of rods. A soft tip is one thing - the IGFA blanks are long, slow, bend far back in the blank, set up for chairs and do not build at good stand up rod. Check out the the Seeker listings on the sponsor ist. Jim Upton is the customer service guy there and he can assist you in selecting the proper blank for your requirements.

If your customer is going to fish for IFGA records I would sit down with him and go to their websight and ask for the specs. for the rods you decide on and then build to them. As if the record is caught but not on the right specs...... both you and your customer would be heart broken...You for not building the record catching rod and him for missing the chance of a lifetime.

Please go to the following link:

[www.igfa.org] ( I am unable to copy and paste the link to the rules section but you can get there with a couple of clicks of the mouse.)

Once on the link click on Fishing in the top header and select Rules.

There will be a complete breakdown of all rules for fishing rods and fly rods that pertain to the rods in use when submitting a fish for world record status. The rules do not include descriptors for the type of blank used in each class category. Jason Schratweiser with the IGFA Rules Committe has commented on this board about the interpretation of the rules for various type of rods.

The real issue about Scotts' rods is related to chair use or stand up. The proper spread for trooling can be done with either but if a guy wants to whip a 200 pound yellowfin with a standard IGFA trooling rod set up for chair use while standing up I wish him well.
