I would appreciate a recommendation for the correct grease or oil to use on roller guides. A client has asked me to clean and grease his guides on an offshore tuna rod along with a few other repairs.
I'd appreciate your input Walt Davenport "Roadhouse Rods" Re: Roller Guide Maintenance

I'm sure that's fine. Superlube is what I always used, just a little.
The AFTCO rollers with the "AFTCOTE" surface coating on the bushing surfaces shouldn't really need anything although it often peels after a few seasons. .......... Re: Roller Guide Maintenance

Try Xtreme Lube. Slipperier than a grease or oil, displaces water, resists salt and comes as a liquid and a grease. Good stuff. Re: Roller Guide Maintenance

All those lubes mentioned above are probably good as any water resistant lube may be
acceptable...... However I have always found it best to disassemble the whole roller. Then to clean with a quality degreaser; dry well. Then do a internal grease job. It seems even the small roller "bearing" can be coated with "crud"; and it will not be removed just by a squirt externally of WD-40. A little more time involved but it seems to be worth it. Thanks Jack, The guides have been completely disassembled and cleaned; just wanted to make sure i was using a reliable prodxuct to grease them on reassembly. Walt
Just remember that if you use a grease like superlube, you want an extremely thin layer. Too much and you will attract gunk and bind.. I used to use Superlube, but found I got better "freespool" with red corrosion x and I don't have to worry about it gunking up.. Never tried x-treme lube I would never use WD-40 on them.. Most Roller Guide company's tell you NOT to use water dispersing spray
i.e.: WD40, RP7, Inox ect AFTCO recommends just using a waterproof grease Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 08/06/2008 10:43AM by Simon Oakley. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
