Air bubbles in CP on tiger wrap?

I seem to be having problems with tiger wraps and air bubbles in what I am guessing is the CP coats on the top layer of thread. There are many very fine bubbles that make the wrap seem cloudy. I know it is not the epoxy. I had been using Flex Coat CP and recently switched to TM CP. The TM is much improved but bubbles still remain. I use a stiff brush to apply the CP.
Any thoughts? Re: Air bubbles in CP on tiger wrap?

I'm a bit mystified. If you didn't put the CP there, what do you mean "guessing is the CP coats on the top layer of the thread"?
If you did put it there, then either you didn't get the bubbles out of the CP before you applied it, or your brushes are carrying air, or you're getting air from the thread and the question would be what thread are you using? Uncle Russ Calico Creek Rods Re: Air bubbles in CP on tiger wrap?

Here is the deal- I wrap the bottom layer. Then 2 coats of CP. Then 2 coats of finish. (No bubbles at this point). Top layer of thread. 2 coats of CP. 2 coats of finish. Then BAM bubbles.
I cannot see the bubbles until the top layer of finish is applied, which then allows me to see through to the bottom layer. Then I can see ultra fine bubbles trapped between the layers of epoxy and in between the thread "rows". As for thread it is just size A Gudebrod. But I don't feel that it is a thread issue. When appling CP were you using heavy coats? I would have applied light thin coats and let it cure at least 2 hours between coats. I think this is a opperator error.

Scott - I struggle with the exact same problem and I haven't had time to nail it down yet. I was using old Gudebrod 811 CP.

When you wrap the top layer, there is a space between the thread. Air is trapped and tries to release and the bubbles may actually be in the finish, not the CP.
I would advise this - use a soft brush for applying the CP. You'll get less bubbles there right off the bat. Do the same with your finish. Also, don't shake the CP bottle, stir it. It's also important not to brush the CP or the epoxy around. You load the brush and lower it to the rod and then turn the rod under the brush. If you brush the CP or the epoxy, particularly lengthwise, you're going to create a huge load of tiny bubbles. ............. Re: Air bubbles in CP on tiger wrap?

May I add, Try and follow the direction of the thread one way, when applying CP. Let that first coat dry nown with the second coat reversr the direction.

Scott & Chuck
Strongly suggest that the solution to mitigating your problem is applying both CP & Finish coat in exactly the same spiral direction as your top thread. ie along the thread not across it. Had the same problem way way back when a fancy binding was an open spiral of thread straight on the blank surface between short trim rings on the end of a plain guide wrap. As Tom describes ..........its very easy for air to get trapped under the undersides of the single open-spaced top wraps. DenisB Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
