I'm building a 50# stand up rod and wondered what you preferred, a swivel or pivot tip top or a regular roller tip top? Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 06/30/2008 04:55PM by Tim Hurst. Re: 50# standup pivot or standard tip top

You may get varying opinions on this one. If I was using wire line, I'd have a swivel tiptop on there. If not, a standard non-swivel type. The difference for me is the chance of the wire working against the side of the top frame. With the swivel top, this isn't likely to happen.

Personally, I would use a non-swivel top. If the rod is for someone who knows what they are doing, non swivel 100% of the time unless specified otherwise.
Also if it is for a novice fisherman, I would use a swivel top as well. They may not fight the fish from the best angle possible and the swivel top will eliminate any possible mishaps of the fish becoming 90 degrees to the angler and forcing the mono between the roller and its frame. I have to agree with Tom about the wire line issue as well. Re: 50# standup pivot or standard tip top

Non swivel, one less thing to go wrong when fighting a big fish...
Some of the Tuna guys who keep the rod in the swivel rod holders will use the swivel tip. Wire line, different issue Re: 50# standup pivot or standard tip top

Besides wire line fishing, a swivel top is a must if the line coming off the tips of the outrigger rods are at such an angle to were they are chaffing the side frames of the standard roller tips. Re: 50# standup pivot or standard tip top

I think thats similar to what I said, but from a fish fighting standpoint. Glad to know my concept of math still isnt screwed up Re: 50# standup pivot or standard tip top

I would disagree somewhat on the outrigger rod statement. I've fished on a lot of tuna and billfish trolling trips (most recently this past Saturday), and I've yet to see an outrigger rod using a swivel tip. The incredibly heavy lines used, and the fact that the line will almost never, ever be sitting at exactly the same place on the tip more than once, and the fact that a regular roller tip top has rounded edges negates the need for a swivel tip. A regular tip top works perfectly, and is the norm. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
