I have 2 older handcrafted star rods 12-30# that I can only guess to be about 10-15years old (possibly older). Does anyone happen to know what blanks they used back then. They have a spiral feel similar to the gator glass and old shakespeare blanks, but interestingly enough, change color with different light angles. They are also a graphite gray color which is why I am truly unsure what these blanks are or who made them. Thanks Re: Star Rods

Not really sure. The old Magnuflex rods were on a similar bent. Solid glass usually.
If you can get to an area on the butt somewhere, maybe take a gimbal of cap off and sand the blank a little, you're get either white residue (glass) or grey (most likely carbon). Are they solid or tubular? .............. Re: Star Rods

Sean almost all the older Star rods were made on Gator Glass blanks, they did have a couple of models that utilized ugly stiik blanks, and a couple that were OEM for them, roughly 90% or higher were gator glass

Sean,
I am a collector of old Star Rods. The very original Stars were basically a custom rod just like you and I would build. They were mainly composed of White and Brown Fenwick blanks during the 70s and used Fuji components. The name "Star Rod" was even hand written on the blank. In the 80's they started using black gator glass blanks. A lot of the old Star rods are very hard to find. Really the ones that are hand written (gator glass or fenwick), and old ones that are over 8 foot (the B-50 and similar models used to be 9ft) are the most rare. Re: Star Rods

Thank you everyone.
Yep. I have one with handwritten Star Rods on them. Specifically " Custom Crafted by Star Rods GB 20/30 CC " in a cursive style. I guess GB appears to mean Gator Blank which was my initial guess. I have no clue what the "CC" is for. They are 8' blanks, although one has been cut down to about 7' 8". Re: Star Rods

At least a number of Star rods had the writing put on by the distributors sometimes for special customers to make them look more custom. They had a somewhat different system for distribution then other brands and they the distributors protected their retail sellers.Frank Thomson was the fl west coast distributor for a good number of years and he often could be found putting something in writing on the rods
