epoxy

I have been having some problems removing bubbles from the epoxy on the rod. I have tried using a propane torch which helps, but often doesn't remove all of the bubbles, and I have even blown warm breath on the area to draw out the bubbles. The expoxy I have been using sets in 60 minutes, and I don't work with it beyond ten to fifteen minutes. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks.

Jim a little more please. When you use the term expoxy what are you referring to exactly. Thread finish or adhesive. If you are talking about a thread finish which brand are you referring to?

I'm using the epoxy as a thread cover. It is a Super Glue epoxy and has a setting time of 60 minutes. I have tried the packets which come with some rod building kits, but I have found that I can't control the mixes well even when I use all the the packets, i.e. the glue and the hardener, and I end up with epoxy that never sets. Heating the epoxy before mixing and controlling the room temp. are good ideas I do this work in my basement here in Nebraska and work mostly on rod building in the winter. Would a low output hair dryer work?

Jim,

That is an epoxy adhesive and isn't what you want to use. It's NOT a thread finish. I doubt that you will ever get a clear suitable finish using it (I could be wrong.

I agree on the packets but any of the standard finishes are excellant and they all come in bottles. Getting accurate measurements is ridiulously simple with them [www.rodbuilding.org] Check out the Library page (at the top) there is an excellant article of finishes.

Epoxy adhesive is not what you want for a thread coating. Try a product that is designed for the specific purpose at hand and dump the torch while you're at it.
