Am I going loony - My blanks getting lighter?

Ok, I've a couple of blanks that I weighed about 2 weeks after manufacture - about a year ago.
I just remeasured them and both seem to have gotten lighter by about 3%. Whaaaat? So there are 3 possibilities: 1. My measuring instrument is going wacky. Unlikely it seems. 2. My memory is bad - possible, but I have a distinct memory of what I weighed. 3. Blanks after production continue to have their bonding agent (whatever that may be) continue to evaporate.... So, is #3 actually be happening? Or something else? I don't think I've read anything about earth's gravity decreasing....:) Thanks, Mo Re: Am I going loony - My blanks getting lighter?

Check your instrument, and make note of the weights when you measure them.
Dunno about the resin in the blanks "evaporating", but over time the resins cure fully and lose water? I seem to remember two words: condensation polymerization....... Re: Am I going loony - My blanks getting lighter?

Mo'
Some other factors "to weigh" (pun intended) should be added to your list of three. 4) Global Warming 5) Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy 6) Holes in the ozone layer 7) Tornado Alley 8) Area 51 9) Al Gore Theres never a better to inject some humor into a situation than right this second. Mo,
It's the new "Americanized Way". We are not allowed to descriminate against being over-weight so the instruments have all been re-calibrated secretly to reflect a lighter weight than they actually are. If this is really happening, maybe we can put a projected weight on our finished rods, you know, how much we think they will weigh in a year. I wish some of mine would get lighter. My guess is that if you didn't write the information down, or your scale is different or older, the change is somewhere else other than in the blanks, i.e. your head or your equipment.

could drying of the finish have any thing to do with it? Perhaps the evaporation? Re: Am I going loony - My blanks getting lighter?

Support OOOBama and demand equal time at the National Beaureau of Standards and have the numbers Published in the National Register! Or just mail Hillary a check and don't worry about anything being done! Re: Am I going loony - My blanks getting lighter?

i woudl say its the machine or the memory that needs calibrating - but at 3%, unless these are monster blanks, were talking hundredths of an ounce, right? depending on the tolerances of the scale, it might not be unreasonable
did you move to somewhere wiht less gravity? or maybe there's less air inside of blank? Re: Am I going loony - My blanks getting lighter?

I think Loony is it.....:)
Yes, bare blank. So, concensus is that blank has not gotten lighter. Thanks, Mo Re: Am I going loony - My blanks getting lighter?

Chris, that's nothing. I should have expected much more ribbing than what you guys dished out. Did I tell you about the blanks filled with Helium gas that I'll be trying next?
Bill, Yeah...now, THAT's a great idea. Blankless. I saw a video recently where the fisherwoman indeed did go blankless in the ultimate UL rig. She just tied hook/line to empty soda bottles, tossed them on the water, and then came back later to retrieve the bottles with fish on the end of the line. I think I'm going to sell off all my rods and reels. Anyone are to purchase my remaining rod buiding material? LOL. MO Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 05/02/2008 06:31PM by Mo Yang. Mo,
That lady tying line and hooks on to bottles, baiting them and letting them float around is called jugging from where I come from. Have caught a lot of catfish doing just that. Just make sure it's legal in your state. Re: Am I going loony - My blanks getting lighter?
