I plan to use a 24 oz. Old Salty planer from my boat for tuna that are deep. What short stout blank or completed rod would be recommended? I will use a #50 reel for 200# line. The purpose of the rod is just to hold the planer. The main line will come off of a different rod. Thanks,

MOst everyone I have seen do this use a solid glass rod as well. If it is strictly for the planer, no point in really using anything else.. IMHO. -Steve Tampa, FL Re: What blank for a heavy 24 oz.planer?

I have used a Penn 9|0 with dacron backing and monel wire line on a Lamiglas 130lb regulation trolling rod with a Uni-butt for a #24 planer for years. It is a heavy rod and it barely bends with the planer set. We had the planer inline with a skirted ballyhoo or 5 1/2" silver spoon and would leave the rod in the rod holder and just crank it in from there. Not very sporting but worked very well. Mostly on Yellowfin up to 70lbs. Used this set up on Charter boats as well as a couple of commercial trolling trips for tuna. I now use a Penn downrigger with wire cable. Why not tie the planer to the back cleat? Re: What blank for a heavy 24 oz.planer?

Thad,
How much line did you let out? How short was the rod and how many guides wereon it? Thanks, Sanford Re: What blank for a heavy 24 oz.planer?

The Rod is IGFA regulation trolling 130lb 7 feet long. The amount of line varied to how deep I wanted it to run. Never kept a line count on it though when I started catching grouper on it I knew I was to deep. Number of roller guides is seven counting the top.
