High speed finishing

How do you apply epoxy at high speeds such as 200rpm without the epoxy flying everywhere? This may be a dumb qustion and I may not be that bright but i tried to use my power wrapper to apply finish at high speed and made a mess any advice would be helpful

One more thing is there a video anywhere of this technique being used?

Ralph O'Quinn has demonstrated this technique at several of the past Rod Expos. I'm not aware of any DVD or video available on it. Do a search under Ralph's name and you may find some additional information.

For the record, 200 rpm is Ralph's preferred speed of application. You'd want to make sure that you're not going much faster than that - at or under that speed you shouldn't have a problem, but as you may know, your power wrapper can easily turn much faster than that and you may be turning faster than you think you are.

Do a test - with a second hand on a nearby clock, count the number of guide revolutions in about 10 seconds. You should only count about 30. More than that and you're too fast.

The unit from Flex Coat that turns at 200 RPM is not as fast as you think. I just load up the brush with epoxy and let the turning of the rod pull the epoxy off the brush. For myself with not the steadiest of hands, you can get very nice clean and straight edges of epoxy to the blank. The nice thing with the Flex Coat unit, it also has a slip clutch for the chuck and all you have to do to stop the rotation of the rod is grab the blank, then let go and it starts spinning again. For myself, it is much quicker to apply the epoxy and get all the guides and wraps coated with epoxy and then I can go back and make adjustments as need to the amoutn of epoxy on the rod. I then move the rod to a dryer that is at 4 RPM to finish the rod.

When doing the test count install a large diameter fly guide such as a 30 - it will make the determination a lot easier to count. 200 rpm will not throw finish - it is not as fast as you think when you have something on it to give you a good reference point - your wrapper will work fine - after one or two you will be glad you took the time to investigate - you will not go back.

The Flex Coat DVD has a segment on using the 200 RPM finishing machine. When I was using my power wrapper I turned the speed control to a lower setting so the rod wouldn't turn to fast. Like said above 200 RPM's is not that fast, I'm now using a 100 RPM motor with the Flex Coat slip clutch, it works all right but I would prefer some thing a little faster.
