I am building a muskie rod and plan to use an underwrap before wrapping my guides. I also plan to use CP on both wraps. My question is should I also apply a light coat of finish to the underwraps before wrapping the guides?
By the way, I have really enjoyed reading all of the great hints and comments on this site. I started reading before I started building, and all of you gave me the confidence to get started in this great hobby. Re: newbie question on underwraps

I typically don't apply finish between the underwrap and overwrap. If I'm using CP, I get all the underwraps completed on the rod first, give them a couple coats of CP and let them dry overnight. Then I'll go back and get the guide wrapped on. Then another couple coats of CP for the overwrap, time to dry, and finish normally. Unless you're doing a tiger-wrap, I wouldn't see any reason for the extra layer of epoxy and weight that it adds. Re: newbie question on underwraps

the only thing I use CP on it my thread art or weaves Why are you using CP on your under wrap? I would think you would like your finish to penetrate your thread.

Actually, I have never used CP before, but in reading different posts, it was my understanding that CP would help keep the true color of the thread and not diffuse or change. Like I said I'm really a Newbie at this. Re: newbie question on underwraps

I use CP and no epoxy before adding the guide. You definitely want to use CP if you are using nylon thread and don't want the color of the blank to show through the underwrap. Re: newbie question on underwraps

CP only, one coat on the underwrap, one coat (or more) on the top wrap.
