KPDS Hoods

I am considering attempting to remove the hood from a normal KPDS hood and replace it with a soft touch hood from a regular nut.

Has anyone done this? Is there a trick or are the hoods on for good.

Cheers
Chris

It can be done Chris, it's a tad fiddly, and the newer hoods are fitted a bit tighter. They are attched the same way as the regular hood and nuts, so the same procedure will work. Basically screw them onto the threads of a reel seat BACKWARDS, so the threads engage and the nut hangs off. Lock the seat in a vice or something solid, and grab the hood with pliers and pull/prise it off. Be sure to cushion the plier jaws with some cloth or some kind of padding.

Do a search for a post on here a while back. It's called "Can Fuji Nut/Hoods be disassembled?"

A little heat from a hair dryer or heat gun will loosen up the glue also. I stress LITTLE it goes a long way. Also, as Ted says, If using pliers be very careful or you will crush the cork, just in case that's what you want to save. That's how I read your post.

Nope Bill, he wants to swap the nuts. The KDPS is the integrated foregrip/locking nut. Just like the regular nuts and hood, the hood is crimped over a raised ridge on the nut. No glue, but in your defense I have no idea if Chris has glued up the grip material to the KDPS yet. You just need to hold everything firm and get the crimped edge to pop off of the nut. With the tighter fitting ones you may have to stick something in there to help prise it off, being careful not to damage anything or scratch it up. The older seats had a slightly looser crimping that you could just bend to pop it off.

I am actually going to attempt to swap some soft touch hoods with the standard sliver ones which come on the KPDS locking hood.

Cheers
Chris

Understand, thanks for the correction. I thought you just wanted to swap the cork from one to the other. My appologies!! Would this work to swap on a Holo hood?

Would work if they were about the same size at that crimping point. Not a huge amount of difference between seats of the same size.

yep they come off and are interchangable once you figure out how to remove them, like the post above says only thing that holds them in is small ridge but it is surpriseing tough to get them off without some trickery. I swap them out all the time with the pure chrome ones from japan a much nicer look to me. I use a 90 degree pick tool, something like the first three in this in this picture.

Yeah, a bit like changing a bleedin' car tire sometimes.
